What in the world are we in a hurry about?

Posted by TheCanvasGrey on May 25, 2007

Hurry, hurry, push on through, I’ve got to get it done.

Hurry, hurry, I must have more fun.

Busy, busy, no time to spare,

Busy, busy, no time to share.

Where oh where do I go next?

Who oh who gets the next text?

What in the world are we in a hurry about?

Why do we fret in traffic that may make us late for work or an appointment?  Are we fretting because we didn’t anticipate the traffic?  Are we frustrated because we should have known to take another way, leave a little earlier or later?  Why are we buzzing in and out of lanes to get a few cars or miles ahead of the others will assist them in some way?    Is it because some advertising executive or some genius in a think tank said that shaving 5 minutes here and 5 minutes there will get you an extra day or two in your life span…maybe if you arrive alive it might.  Or maybe because you are five minutes early to work everyday you may make another dollar or two an hour more and that will net you a few thousand dollars over the course of your shortened life (shortened due to stress).   As my Dad says, “Speed kills!”

Why are so many people in a hurry at the grocery store that they are willing to cut the line or sneak into the 12 items or less lane?  Why do we hurry our meals by buying quick meals or frozen food to cook in a hurry?  And of course we must hurry and eat so we have plenty of time for the quick clean-up!  Fast food anyone?  For many families this is a two to three time a week event.  What is the rush? Why not come home and have a nice long meal with your family without rushing to the next “to do” on the list?

We bombard ourselves, our children with endless activities so that every minute of every day is completely filled.  Are we afraid we won’t get to do everything we want in this life?  Are we afraid of death?  Does a life which is stuffed full of activity equal a life of happiness?  Or are we programmed to keep up with the Joneses?

It is nice to be busy and have purpose but when is too much…too much?  For me it is when I’m stressed out.  And I know I’m stressed out when I raise my voice or my body tenses for longer than a minute or two.  I am learning the benefits of slowing down and enjoying what I’m doing when I’m doing it.  Give it a try.  You will be surprised at the amount of stress that YOU put upon YOU!  And believe it or not, I’ve found more time to do other things.  Really, you’ll be amazed!

Happy Memorial Day weekend!

Say a prayer or two for our troops and remember those who lost their lives so we may live in freedom!
