The Canvas Grey

Inspiration, Perspective, Insight

Posted by TheCanvasGrey on July 8, 2007

In recent reading I came across the Character Strengths and Virtues (CSV) handbook’s organization of virtues and strengths and I’d like to share them and give some thoughts about them.  They are:

Wisdom and Knowledge:  creativity, curiosity, open-mindedness, love of learning and perspective

Courage:  bravery, persistence, integrity, vitality Humanity:  love, kindness, social intelligence

Justice:  citizenship, fairness, leadership

Temperance:  forgiveness and mercy, humility and modesty, prudence, self-regulation

Transcendence:  appreciation of beauty and excellence, gratitude, hope, humor, spirituality

I like the way these are organized.  It helps me to ponder which ones I’m naturally inclined toward and those that I aspire to.  Of course, I’d like my children to have them all and be great at them.  I think most of us would like that to be the case.

Then I realize we are human; to be ALL of these things all of the time is impossible; to strive for ALL of them all of the time would produce insanity.

Why?  Because I’ve tried folks, I still ain’t good enough!  **cheap laugh**

In my mind the reason we won’t ever be “perfect” is because this universe isn’t made for what we deem “perfect”.  The creation isn’t ordered or patterned even though we try to order it and pattern it.  There is still something unexpected, sudden, something from left field.  Whether you look at it on a small or personal scale (car collision) or the grandiose scale (collision of galaxies) creation isn’t what we call “perfectly ordered or patterned”.

So being completely human, I have to settle on the fact of knowing that I can be each of these (and sometimes a combination) at different times in my life for moments in my life.  The most wonderful thing that I’ve found is to accept who I am in all my wonderful attributes and shortcomings because there will never be another me.

I hope I can help my children accept themselves and learn what their strengths are so they may concentrate on the positive things they can do instead of their shortcomings.  Just like there are times to be persistent, there are also times to be prudent.

By the way, I think this universe is perfect enough for me!!!!!!!

Have a great day everyone!
