Inspiration CAN lead to perspiration

Posted by TheCanvasGrey on March 8, 2008

I was inspired by a post at Hawty McBloggy’s place. I really got stars in my eyes when I saw these cupcake toppers.  I thought to myself, the kids would go CRAZY over something like this.  With stars blinding me I remarked I was going to try my hand at the fondant cupcakes.  Then Ms. McBloggy responded with the request for pictures.  Now I HAD to do them! ha!  Yes, it is the gamer in me.

Anyone who has been reading here knows we are really into our Wii.  Super Mario Galaxy is especially gorgeous and spectacular so I wanted to theme my cupcakes after it.  My theme is “Mario Dreams.”

So out I go to get the stuff.  First on the list white fondant.  I know, I know…white…what were you thinking…but hey, I’ve worked with clay, I paint, I’ve watched Food Network’s Ace of Cakes.  No sweat, this should be “a piece of cake” with my credentials.  ***waves of laughter over take my body***  I skipped all the implements that would have cost a small fortune but I did get some awesome color GEL.  I have to say don’t keep buying the old liquid food coloring…get some of this vivid, easy to use gel.  I’ll NEVER go back to liquid.

I hadn’t anticipated that making a few fondant cupcake toppers would take the better part of  a day.  I hadn’t anticipated how long and how many colors my “vision” would need.  I hadn’t counted on actually producing any sweat.  But I did.

So after six straight hours on my feet I placed them proudly on the table and called in the kids for their BIG SURPRISE!  The response was MUCH LESS than imagined in my head.  ***Isn’t it always that way?***  Oh well, it was an experience.  Did you know that fondant does NOT taste good?  Looks pretty but not so great to eat.  So I wrapped them up to harden and reuse over and over again for decorations.  There is no way in heck I’m ditching them after looking at them ten minutes!  😉

So last night I watched Ace of Cakes and was re-inspired to create something with the left over fondant.  I think I’d like to make a 3 D Mario, Mama, Princess Peach or even Zelda.  One thing is for sure I’m taking one day to mix the colors and the other to actually make/shape the end product.

So here without further ado are “Mario Dreams.”  Keep in mind it is my first attempt with fondant, I’m old, decrepit and half blind…okay, not decrepit.

FYI – The number one is the LIFE left for Mario…I’m SURE he has nightmares about THAT!

***We did it!  Hungry Hubby, Big Boy, Young Son and Wailing Woman (that would be me)did it!  As of this morning, Saturday, March 15, 2008 we reached the end of Super Mario Galaxy.  This was a group effort and each of us has our own game going on but we also had a family game.  The boys were jumping up and down with joy!  It was fun and it has beautiful graphics.  The end is VERY nice!***

Invasion of the Hubby Snatchers!!!!

Posted by TheCanvasGrey on March 7, 2008

s2400042_edited.jpgThat is right…invasion of the Hubby Snatchers…coming to a blog near you!

I couldn’t help but snap a few pictures to document the fact that I went to sleep with one large hubby and woke up to two smaller versions this morning.

HOW do they do that and WHEN do they do that?  My hubby explains it as a push and shove proposition that takes place late at night after a spell has been cast over me.

It is quite magical and fun!  I plan to cherish these moments as they go so very quickly.

And while I’m reminded through pictures,  I’m also building ammo for the terrible teens!  😉

A laugh a day…

surprise.jpg    Pregnant Turkey

One year at Thanksgiving, my mom went to my sister’s house for the traditional feast. Knowing how gullible my sister is, my mom decided to play a trick.
She told my sister that she needed something from the store. When my sister left, my mom took the turkey out of the oven, removed the stuffing, stuffed a Cornish hen, and inserted it into the turkey, and re-stuffed the turkey.  She then placed the bird(s) back in the oven.
When it was time for dinner, my sister pulled the turkey out of the oven and proceeded to remove the stuffing. When her serving spoon hit something, she reached in and pulled out the little  bird.
With a look of total shock on her face, my mother exclaimed, “Patricia, you’ve cooked a pregnant bird!”

At the reality of this horrifying news, my sister started to cry.  It took the family two hours to convince her that turkeys lay eggs! Yup…………….SHE’S BLONDE

Thanks to Aunt C for sharing this, I laughed out loud!

EASY Halloween Cookies

Posted by TheCanvasGrey on October 28, 2007

Quick and easy these Halloween Cookies are FUN to make!

Via cell phone my girlfriends sent me this picture of Halloween cookies they made for a party.  Enlarging makes it fuzzy but you can get the idea what they look like from it.  I get a sugar rush just from looking at them!  When they told me how to make them I was amazed at how quick, easy and inexpensive they are!

What you need:  Oreos, white chocolate disks in white and green colors, small white mints, tube decorating icing in black and red.

Heat the colored white chocolate disks in two separate bowls.  Dip the Oreos in one or the other and lay on wax paper to cool.  When cool, decorate!  They made spiderwebs, eyeballs and Frankenstein

I’m not so steady with the icing tubes as they are so I might opt for the edible ink decorating pens they have out now.  What a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon with your kids!  Thanks for sharing trash talking/thrill ride scaring girlfriends!

Hot Fashion Trend Alert for Women

Posted by TheCanvasGrey on October 25, 2007

TREND:  Women wearing their PJs (pajamas) to the store.

THE RULES:  You may NOT wear baby dolls, gowns or house coats…that is tacky and what mama would wear.  It must be a shirt or hoodie with PJ bottoms and slippers!!!!

My dear friends came to visit from another state last month.  She could hardly believe I was serious about this latest trend UNTIL she got back to her state walked into the store and first thing she saw was….yep.   We laughed for 2 solid minutes when she called on her cell.

I guess we found this odd because the grocery store is the PERFECT place to meet the PERFECT eligible man (a man who cooks **wink wink nudge nudge**).

Over the last year I’ve seen everything from a green hoodie, white leggings with pink tulips and bunnie slippers to a yellow camisole, purple M.C. Hammer pants with grandpa slippers.  Some looked not bad…others looked ridiculous! RE-DIC-YOU-LESS cause ya ain’t catching a man you’d want in a get-up like that!

Although I may now consider investing in THESE as the next WHAT TO WEAR!

UPDATE 12/12/07  Ladies, ladies…. alert alert…I kid you not! At school pick up I saw it! Yellow as the sun PJ shirt, brown pj pants and TWEETY YELLOW slippers…fluffy yellow slippers. The trend GROWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Update 12/19/07  Come on people!  This is becoming the thing to do in our area.  I see the slippers out on the street now…BIG FLUFFIES!  We all better hurry over to this website to purchase these before they are SOLD OUT!

I feel like laughing today!

Posted by TheCanvasGrey on July 11, 2007

You may have read these before but they are GREAT for a laugh on a day when you need a laugh VERY MUCH!

 911 Calls

Dispatcher: What is your emergency?
I heard what sounded like gunshots coming from the brown
  house on the corner.
Do you have an address?
No, I have on a blouse and slacks, why?

Dispatcher: What is your emergency?
Caller :  Someone broke into my house and took a bite out of my ham
  and cheese sandwich.
Dispatcher: Excuse me?
Caller: I made a ham and cheese sandwich and left it on the kitchen
table and when I came back from the bathroom, someone had
taken a bite out of it.
Dispatcher: Was anything else taken?
Caller:  No, but this has happened to me before and I’m sick and tired
  of it!

Dispatcher: What is the nature of your emergency?
Caller:   I’m trying to reach nine eleven but my phone doesn’t have
  an eleven on it.

Dispatcher: This is nine eleven
Caller: I thought you just said it was nine-one-one
Dispatcher: Yes, ma’am nine-one-one and nine-eleven are the same
Caller:  Honey, I may be old, but I’m not stupid.

Dispatcher 9-1-1 what’s the nature of your emergency?
Caller:   My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two
  minutes apart.

Dispatcher: Is this her first child?
Caller:   No, you idiot! This is her husband!

Dispatcher: 9-1-1
Caller  Yeah, I’m having trouble breathing. I’m all out of breath.
Darn….I think I’m going to pass out.

Dispatcher: Sir, where are you calling from?
Caller:  I’m at a pay phone at North and Foster.
Dispatcher: Sir, an ambulance is on the way. Are you an asthmatic?
Caller:  No
Dispatcher: What were you doing before you started having trouble
Caller:   Running from the Police.
